Located in an 18th century half-timbered building, the museum dedicated to Jules Michelet (1798-1874) is the only one in France. It was granted the "Maison des Illustres" (Houses of Illustrious People) certification. The French historian lived in Vascoeuil from 1841 to 1861. There, he wrote an important part of his work, including Histoire de France (History of France) and Histoire de la Révolution française (History of the French Revolution). The museum also holds numerous documents that honour the memory of this great man. At the top of the octagon-shaped tower, you will be able to enter his study, which has been exactly recreated (photographs by Nadar, mail, everyday objects, etc.).
Vascoeuil has many other things to do and see: the garden with an open air exhibition of contemporary sculptures, contemporary art exhibitions in the chateau, themed days, musical evenings, etc. Check out the details.
