Close to Verneuil-sur-Avre, visit the Château d’Hellenvilliers that dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Its origin goes back to the 9th century. A warrior named Herland erected a building to protect himself from the Viking invasions. The oldest part of the current chateau dates back to the Renaissance period. It adjoins a chapel, behind which stand a watchtower and outbuildings from the same period. The main section, built at the beginning of the 17th century, was a gallery that linked the Renaissance wing and a former postern. It was converted in the 18th century into state rooms. The right wing, that closes the U-shaped courtyard, dates back to the beginning of the 18th century.
On his way to Ivry in 1590, Henry IV of France spent a night in the castle before fighting against the League led by Charles, Duke of Mayenne one month later.
